Alzheimer’s Society is Awbery’s ‘Charity of the Year’

Awbery has chosen Alzheimer’s Society as its Charity of the Year. Here, our Marketing Coordinator Lucy Lewis explains why the firm has chosen this most deserving of organisations as its charity beneficiary in 2017.

After a lot of consideration, we recently revealed that Awbery is to support Alzheimer’s Society in 2017, by choosing it as its ‘Charity of the Year’.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia is something that has touched many of us here at Awbery and are issues very close to our hearts.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, although there are many different types. It often develops over a period of time and it can be hard to initially diagnose. Very often it is passed off as forgetfulness or put down to old age. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time, however the speed of change can vary from person to person. Alzheimer’s is typically associated with people over 65, with one in six people over the age of 80 developing the disease. However In the UK there are now over 40,000 people under the age of 65 with dementia.

In my case, I have seen first-hand how this terrible disease can slowly change a person from the full character that they once were, to one who is completely dependent on someone else. It is heart-breaking to see the effects that the disease can have, not only on the person that has the disease, but also on the loved ones around them.

As well as severely affecting a person’s personality, memory and speech, it also becomes increasingly difficult for them to carry out simple daily tasks, such as washing, getting dressed and even walking. With numbers of people with dementia rising and costs spiralling, dementia remains a challenge to the UK that cannot be overlooked. 

The whole team at Awbery, and our families and friends are all committed to doing as much as possible to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society and support the amazing work they do.

The Alzheimer’s Society is on a mission to make everyone aware of Dementia. It is their aim to help us understand what it is and what to expect as well as offering practical advice and support to help those living with the condition.

Already, we have scheduled one activity each month to give our fundraising campaign momentum throughout the year and raise as much as possible. The target is set at £500 but it would be wonderful if we could go above and beyond this as we know that every penny counts!

A group of us will be taking part in the ‘Memory Walk’ later in the year, as well as members of our team signing up to become a ‘Dementia Friend’, the campaign run and managed by Alzheimer’s Society, which is an easy way to learn more about dementia. The charity are aiming to create one million ‘Dementia Friends’ by 2020 and we are looking forward to joining this growing group.
