A group of 17 and 18-year-old West Nottinghamshire College students who have their sights on becoming the next generation of film makers, have been given the chance to showcase their talents to national and international businesses under a unique collaboration project with a local training firm.

Derbyshire-based Awbery specialises in delivering high-impact leadership and management development programmes, HR and coaching solutions, to private and public sector companies across the UK and Europe.

For the first time and as part of a new direction for its marketing plans, the firm identified video as the perfect medium to communicate its bespoke coaching programmes, and, keen to support emerging, local talent, approached West Nottinghamshire College about their plans for a corporate film.

Awbery’s Programme & Marketing Coordinator Lucy Lewis, explains: “We began by speaking to West Nottinghamshire College’s tutor Michael Rhodes about our creative brief for the planned corporate video,” she says.

“We didn’t want to restrict the students’ creativity, but instead allow them to create the style of video they felt would work best to meet our objectives. We provided guidance and guidelines on specific content and Awbery’s coaching programme details as a framework.

“The students approached the brief in a highly professional way, and presented their ideas in a very comprehensive, creative and business-like pitch, and this professionalism continued throughout the video’s production schedule.”

The student’s pitched a shortlist of ideas for a five-minute video. The chosen anminated format showcases the benefits of Awbery’s coaching and coaching solutions for individual senior executives, business teams, and entire organisations, and will featureon Awbery’s website, YouTube channel, on social media channels, and will be the central tool of the firm’s ongoing business development and marketing activities for companies across Europe.

“The video is brilliant,” says Lucy. “We are so impressed with the student’s talents, ability to interpret the brief, and the quality of the video itself. Awbery’s team is absolutely delighted.”

Michael Rhodes is lead tutor at West Nottingham College and supported his students on the creation and production of Awbery’s video. He adds: “The five students are now in their second year of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media production (TV and Film).

“A core part of this year’s work is creative media production management, which accounts for a third of the second-year final grade, and the corporate video for Awbery was the perfect opportunity for them to demonstrate their skills in producing a video in the ‘real world’. It involved them setting up a video production business with a website, generating their own creative solutions, pitching them to the client and them project managing the entire production process.

“The group have been amazing. Their performance and their work has exceeded all expectations. The project has given them the independence to work directly with a client and they proved they possess creativity, positive ideas and excellent project management skills.

“They have all been awarded Distinction for their excellent work on the project.”

West Nottinghamshire College works in partnership with Derby University and the University of Derby to teach a wide range of university-level courses such as foundation degrees as well as offering seven top-up courses enabling students to achieve an Honours Degree. Most of its programmes are delivered at the new Vision University Centre based at the college’s Derby Road campus.
